I guess I always did but I still struggle with it.

What do you like about making art in Los Angeles?

Los Angeles is a great place to make art, anything goes!

Difficulty finding good studio space.

Favorite book, film and food?

Book- Alcoa's Book of Decorations (1959 decorate your home with tin foil.)

Film- Paint Your Wagon

Best art advice?

Keep making art and stay connected.

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Kim Tucker studied ceramic sculpture under the direction of Viola Frey and Arthur Gonzalez at the California College of Arts and Crafts, graduating with a B.F.A. Kim then went on to receive her M.F.A under the guidance of M.J. Bole from The Ohio State University. Kim is currently the teaching ceramics at Mount St. Mary’s College here in Los Angeles.

She will have a solo show of her work at L2 Kontemporary Gallery in Los Angeles in May of 2011. Kim's drawings can be seen in Paper Trail at Happy. Come by and see what she created especially for us!

Paper Trail Artist Spotlight: Kris Chatterson

Kris Chatterson was born in Orlando, FL. and currently lives and works in New York City. He received his BFA from the Ringling School of Art and Design and his MFA from Claremont Graduate University.

Happy: Artwork (or artist ) that changed your life and why?

Chatterson: Leslie Lerner changed my life. He was my painting teacher during my undergraduate years. He had more faith in me as a painter than I did at the start. He seemed to know things about my development as an artist that I would only come to understand later. I had the feeling that he trusted me to follow my intuition, which gave me the confidence to explore all sorts of crazy directions.

Happy: When did you first know you wanted to be an artist?

Chatterson: I'm not sure I ever wanted to be an artist, I think I always was one. There is nothing else I could do with my life. In many ways, art saved me. There was a moment in my life when I knew that it was what I needed to do. In high school, I was directionless, and so I ended up causing trouble. That often landed me in the administrator's office. During my senior year, I landed in in-school suspension. At that time, my first class of the day was painting, so my friends went to the teacher to get my painting and materials so that I could "work" on my assignment. I spent the whole day quiet as a mouse, focused on my work. When I ran out of color they would send someone to reload my palette. It was like having an assistant! I had never painted for such a long stretch, that being the whole day, and I loved it. Once I found out about art school it was all over. I was going and that was all there was to it. So here I am.

Happy: What do you like about making art in Los Angeles (and/or NYC!)?

Chatterson: I loved the isolation of working in LA. It was at a time in my life where I needed to face myself to see what I was made of. Working in NYC is great because there is so much to see and do. People in New York are also more curious about art and will go out of their way to see it.

Happy: What do you dislike about making art in Los Angeles (and/or NYC!)?

Chatterson: LA can some times be too relaxed. Getting people over can be like pulling teeth. There is a part of New York that is very competitive. I see a lot of people using each other to improve their career. I find it rather silly and outdated.

Happy: Favorite book, film and food?

Chatterson: Book- "Our Ecstatic Days" by Steve Erickson. Film- "Blade Runner" directed by Ridley Scott. Food- Carrie's enchiladas.

Happy: Favorite website?

Chatterson: Facebook, I love it, I'm always on it.

Happy: Best art advice?

Chatterson: An artist's career is a marathon not a sprint. Work hard, take your time to develop, and be patient. Be nice.

Meet the Artist: Carlos Ulloa

Artwork (or artist ) that changed your life and why?
Well, there are the popular influences such as David Smith and his Medals of Dishonor and H.C. Westermann and his Death Ships. At some point, discovering their works changed my perspective, hurling me off in new directions. But the foundation of my work is built on the work ethic, research and craftsmanship of my mentor, Steve Linn. I worked for Steve in NYC during the late '80s. He opened my eyes and my heart to the obsession required to be an artist. More recently, while obtaining my MFA, I discovered the shared responsibility of every artist to be a critical thinker and conscious creator. I was nourished by the dedication and awareness from every staff member at Vermont College. Finally, two local LA artists, Eder Cetina and L. Crotsky, have been holding my feet to the fire. There frankness and encouragement tests me to create to my fullest potential.

When did you first know you wanted to be an artist?
When I got back to Miami from NYC I toyed with the idea of getting an MBA. I applied to a few top caliber universities. I actually got accepted to a very prestigious MBA program at Northeastern University. It was the “safe” gateway to monetary success which I just couldn’t choose over my love for creating. Since then making art has been an unbending way of life.

What do you like about making art in Los Angeles?
LA has dared me to introduce vibrant color and playfulness into my work. It has also forced me to think of new ways to get my work out to the public (i.e. ARTStrike and installations)

What do you dislike about making art in Los Angeles?:
The sense of entitlement and egocentrism that seems to dominate the behavior of its inhabitants, including many of its artists. It's crazy but the City of Angels seems to have the motto, “what can I get from my brother?" instead of "what can I share with my brother?”.

Favorite book, film and food?
Among my favorites: Silk, Rivers and Tides and homemade Cuban

Favorite website?
Anywhere I can download music affordably.

Best art advice?
Constantly pose the question, “what is my goal as an artist?”. Then add daring and dedication to that answer.

Meet the Artist: Karen Frimkess Wolff

Artwork (or artist ) that changed your life and why? There were many but, to name a few: Francis Bacon - seeing his terrifying painting of the pope (after Velasquez) in the UCLA art gallery in 1960 I realized how powerful an image could be and that an artist didn't have to be nice or try to please. You could be honest about your thoughts and tell the world about it. Seeing Connie Zehr's poetic works and then taking a one-day class with her, learning that my art didn't have to be a permanent object if I wanted to create an experience instead. Woman House and all the experiences with the Women's Art Movement from 1972 to 1975 actually saved my life, let me find art in my own activities and interests and gave me the permission to establish a way of working that fit my own needs and requirements.

When did you first know you wanted to be an artist? From the time I knew anything, maybe 4 or 5 years old, I knew I would be an artist though I didn't know how or what it meant. I tried many ways to be an artist, hoping that one of the paying types like illustration, window design, or advertising would work for me. Finally, I realized I just had to draw and make the art that was in my head and that was called "fine art" so I would have to make a living doing something else.

What do you like about making art in Los Angeles? I was born here. I have always lived here so I'm comfortable here. The art community here is big enough to be exciting and interesting and I know a lot of artists that I respect and admire. I have plenty of support and good friends here. I would make art under any circumstances, and I have, but I appreciate the opportunity to be comfortable in familiar surroundings.

What do you dislike about making art in Los Angeles? Los Angeles is so busy with other things that art gets forgotten and ignored by the city. We have very little effective art press here so it's hard to get serious feedback on your work. Getting around to see art requires so much driving that I miss a lot that I would like to see.

Favorite book, film and food? In high school I read The Cloister and the Hearth by Charles Reade. It's about a young man who travels around and makes his living painting playing cards. I think it was supposed to be about a choice between marriage and the church but that wasn't the important part for me. Later, the diaries of Anaïs Nin were important to my life and development of my own work. Also, e.e. cummings' The Enormous Room. I have liked many films but nothing ever had as strong an impact as seeing The Wizard of Oz. I would have been about 5 when I saw it in a regular theater, when it was brand new. As an adult, maybe Midnight Cowboy. I love food and I am married to a talented chef so I eat really well. But I do love banana splits with 3 flavors of great ice cream, chocolate and butterscotch syrup.

Favorite website? I can barely do the basics on my computer so I don't really go looking at websites. I'm grateful that I have one and someone to keep it up for me. I look at the websites of my friends or new artists I meet.

Best art advice? Work regularly. You may not always have a lot of time but if you can establish and keep a regular work time, however short, you will get your essential work done.

KAREN FRIMKESS WOLFF: Calm Ideas & Mortal Things

In our main space, Karen Frimkess Wolff offers new graphite and pencil drawings specifically made for Happy. Known primarily for her sculpture and installation work, this is a rare opportunity to experience the Los Angeles artist’s haunting works. Using pure white gesso on press board as her surface, Karen’s landscapes convey a complex visual vocabulary that combines flora and fauna and a treasury of objects that sometimes soar, sometimes lay perfectly still, but always possess deep meaning. A brilliant draftsman and master storyteller, Karen returns to the simple act of drawing with a sense of aplomb, a hand that is always present and the soul of a gentle soothsayer. Whimsical and unapologetic in her approach, Karen creates meditative encouragements to thoughtful reflection. According to the artist “I want to notice carefully, to be grateful for beauty, to balance nature, artifice and my human contrivance.” Karen lives and works in Los Angeles. She received her B.A. in Painting from UCLA and her M.A. in Art History from California State University, Northridge.

CARLOS ULLOA: Schrank

Carlos Ulloa invades Happy with a menagerie of his signature collage silhouettes. Schrank (German for closet) presents these fragmented, ghost-like hybrids as secrets, memories, nightmares, antagonists or good friends that imbed themselves in Happy’s project room. Some fade into the woodwork while others expose themselves, shamelessly reminding the viewer of the skeletons we keep in our own closets. By creating these works and then repositioning them in our space, Carlos gives himself the opportunity to come to terms with the art he has created; he is able to further manipulate and re-investigate the work and ultimately exploit the delicate balance between the artist and subject. Limited-edition impressions are available in the Schrank. Come in and see what’s in Carlos’ closet. Carlos lives and works in Los Angeles. He received his B.F.A. from Hartwick College, NY and his M.F.A. from Vermont College of Fine Arts, VT.

In the mid-1990s I moved to LA and one of the first exhibitions I saw was work by Annette Messager at LACMA. I found her work to be beautiful, mysterious, odd, and disturbing. She created these amazing installations using knitted materials, fabric and photography. I was completely affected by her work. I just remember being under these strange forms hanging from the ceiling and just wanting to stay still. I still remember this experience so vividly. It was the first time I really thought about the possibilities of art making and definitely questioning the meaning of “art.”

When did you first know you wanted to be an artist? That is a funny question. As a child I liked to do two things: lie and pretend. I liked to think of myself as a storyteller, but I was mostly a liar. I would spend hours with my sister creating stories and then acting them out. My sister didn’t like playing “pretend” with me. I would tell her she wasn’t pretending right and make her do it over again. I still love telling stories...to straddle the lines between fiction and non-fiction. So much hasn’t really changed, except that now I call myself an “artist.”

What do you like about making art in Los Angeles? I like meeting other artists and discovering how they look at the world or understanding their artistic process. In LA there is a sense of “do- it- yourself” resilience that I just love. Galleries close and artists open up their homes and create other spaces to show work. Times are difficult but I also see artists supporting each other and creating a much stronger art community.

What do you dislike about making art in Los Angeles? I suppose it has to be the economic realities of having to work a day job and not spending more time in the studio. So it takes a real commitment…a commitment to the work, to keep working and to push the work in new directions.

Favorite Books, Films, Food?

Books: Writings by Agnes Martin (constantly re-reading), Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, The Accidental Masterpiece by Michael Kimmelman, Willful Creatures by Amiee Bender, Written on the Body by Jeanette Winterson.
films: The Red Balloon, Harold & Maude and The Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant.
food: Nabeyaki Udon, Korean BBQ and Indian Food.

Meet the Artist: Corina Gamma

Artwork (or artist ) that changed your life and why? I think it was the retrospective of Rebecca Horn at the Guggenheim in New York many years back that motivated me to do a Masters in Fine Art.

When did you first know you wanted to be an artist? I don’t think being an artist is a question of choice. I think you are born with a kind of a storm inside of you. The choice is when you decide to make a living with it. I was obsessed with drawing since I was 12 or so. But, I became really committed to art in my 30s.

What do you like about making art in Los Angeles? There are a lot of clashes here -cultural, religious, there are many different characters ending up in Los Angeles, that makes this place interesting and exciting. It’s a micro-cosmos. It is also a place that teaches tolerance and I like that. Trying to get along is the only thing everyone here has in common. For an artist LA offers a lot of freedom - we are not restricted to a local tradition or lineage. It’s a place where one can experiment.

What do you dislike about making art in Los Angeles? LA puts more attention to film making, not art making. That is the strong culture here. There are other challenges like scarcity of affordable studio spaces.

Favorite book, film or food? I have a favorite book every month, but I really liked Arctic Dream by Barry Lopez. I’m attracted to the Polar Regions, but the way he describes the Arctic is truly poetic. And I love Indian food.

Favorite website? I don’t have a favorite website. But I love surfing the web.

Best art advice? To the policy makers: I do know there are more important problems to solve than funding art. But to have a creative outlet when you’re young teaches you about yourself. I think my art helps me give an identity; an individual identity. I don’t who I would be if art was not part of my life.

HAPPY is pleased to present new photographs by Corina Gamma in our main space. In “Layers of Separation” Gamma continues her investigation of the landscape. Employing her signature pure, opaque style, these winter tales (complete with bundled-up skiers) are atmospheric, illuminated sanctuaries. Gamma’s wicked sense of formal structure re-position these seemingly innocent weekend snapshots as suspenseful melodramas. Huddled figures eagerly await their fate as they are passively strung along, feet dangling from a ski lift cable that may or may not lead them to fun and frolic. Gamma’s figures yearn for freedom but are momentarily stuck in an empty world, encumbered by their uniforms and hoping for the best. Their fleeting moments of closeness, watched over by some unseen force, are soon to be forsaken for the perfect slope. Corina Gamma was born and raised in Switzerland and currently lives and works in Los Angeles. Her work can currently be seen in “State of Mind” at the Museum of Photographic Arts in San Diego. She is a graduate of Claremont Graduate University (MFA) and University of California, Riverside, CA, (BA) and currently teaches fine art photography at Long Beach City College. http://www.gammasphere.net/

In our project room is a site-specific installation by sculptor Rochelle Botello. “Yesterday’s Combover” is an imaginary world where girls can offer their hair to their dog, boys with hairy faces can ride bikes and men can play dress up. This animated world is filled with humorous and absurd scenarios that exploit extremes and contradictions; humor and tragedy, perversion and pleasure, fragility and brutality, control and letting go. By capturing traces of experiences both real and imagined, Botello crafts stories that address issues of identity, intimacy and sexuality. Constructed in bright color combinations and decorative patterns in unexpected juxtapositions, the sculptures are pieced together with everyday materials such as paper, duct tape and cardboard. Botello creates heartbreaking yet comic vignettes that gently expose the complex and contradictory nature of everyday life. Rochelle Botello was born in Denver, Colorado and currently lives and works in Los Angeles. She is a graduate of Claremont Graduate University (MFA) and the University of California, Santa Cruz (BA, Sociology). http://www.rochellebotello.com/

Meet the Artist: Michael Blasi

Artwork (or artist ) that changed your life and why?
Paolo Uccello's Battle of San Romano, at the National Gallery in London. I saw it in 1996, when I was abroad to study printmaking in Glasgow, and I just sat and stared at it forever. What struck me about the painting was that it fit together so perfectly: the shapes lock together in complete harmony, and the palette of cream, gold, pink, brown, and gray tones just sing. The painting transcends the subject matter. I wanted to make art as rhythmic and as completely and inexplicably unified as this work. The other two panels of this triptych are amazing too (if you are in Paris or Florence any time soon). Don't tell me though, I'll just be jealous.

When did you first know you wanted to be an artist?
I was one of those kids who you could put in front of some crayons and a stack of that computer paper with the holes on the sides, and I would be occupied for hours. I think had I made up my mind about the artist thing before I could consciously consider that kind of decision.

What do you like about making art in Los Angeles?
Cultural cacophony makes for great inspiration and I'm discovering lots of unpretentious but wonderful places to show are all around us!

What do you dislike about making art in Los Angeles?
I would like it if there was a space and time bubble to take me out of the daily grind. A trans-dimensional artists' retreat. That would make it perfect.

Favorite book, film and food?
Book: I just finished Asterios Polyp by David Mazzucchelli, which I really liked. Another Country by James Baldwin might be my all time favorite.

Film: Atanarjuat, The Fast Runner,
Food: Raw scallops at Sushi Go 55, on the third floor of the Little Tokyo mall on Alameda and 3rd. Also, The Cracked Crab in Pismo Beach.

HAPPY is pleased to present the renowned Chicago artist William Conger in his first-ever Los Angeles solo exhibition. The esteemed artist will offer intimate gouache works that further investigate his trademark abstract style. In a career that spans over 50 years, Conger continues to incorporate an eclectic vocabulary that is both hard-edged and biomorphic, static and yet sensual. Electric snapshots that upon initial inspection are quite abstract slowly morph into dense landscapes gone slightly awry. These bravura works seem at home in Los Angeles speaking to our traffic-ridden and stress-polluted lives; yet Conger quietly reminds us how to cope. We are treated to his vision and to a technique that conveys how the most rich and delicious imagery can be profoundly touching. Conger’s career confirms a life of serious investigation based on the pure act of creating. William Conger lives and works in Chicago, is professor emeritus at Northwestern University, and is a recipient of both the Illinois Arts Council Grant (2008) and a Pollock-Krasner Grant (2008-09). Recent one person exhibitions include a 1958-2008 retrospective at the Chicago Cultural Center and Roy Boyd Gallery, Chicago in 2009. His works are in major collections including the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, Art Institute of Chicago, Illinois State Museum, Smart Museum at the University of Chicago, Reader’s Digest Collection, NY, Portland Museum, Portland, OR, Wichita Art Museum, Wichita, KS, IBM Corporation, Atlanta, GA and numerous other public and private collections. Upcoming projects include a solo exhibition at the Union League Club of Chicago and group exhibitions at the DePaul University Art Museum, Chicago, IL, Printworks Gallery, Chicago, IL and the Lubeznik Center for the Arts, Michigan City, IN. In our project room we feature recent sculpture by Michael Blasi. Blasi’s bulbous sculptures, based on scholar’s rocks or “suiseki”, start from the artist’s 2 dimensional doodles and grow into hyper-active meditation objects. Blasi’s generous use of color envelopes his delicately hand-crafted objects that hang freely or sit, firmly planted. They are tenderly stoic, romantic laments that gently celebrate life and love while confronting and comforting the viewer in their sublime eccentricity. Blasi received his BFA from Purchase College, State University of New York and participated in the Glasgow School of Art Student Exchange Program. Happy really is one of the most appropriately-named stores we've ever visited—filled with stuff that's both whimsical and functional, and many things that smell nice, it's a definite mood-lifter. On Friday, they debuted a new little art exhibit, Plenty at Happy, that featured teeny, tiny works from about 58 local artists. Mainly paintings, but there were a few ceramic and mixed-media pieces, too. Everything was priced at $100, providing a thrifty and tempting entrée into the word of collecting (or an amazing gift). The show runs through January 24; at the rate that things were selling on Friday, you shouldn't wait around, or there will be nothing left for you to buy. Which wouldn't be very happy at all.

Artwork (or artist) that changed your life and why?

As an insanely neurotic drawer I was immediately attracted to Vija Celmins work. As it turned out, she had a retrospective at the Hammer Museum while I was working on what seemed to be the most challenging drawing of my life---a reflection in water. Standing in the presence of her effortless drawings made me short of breath. That day I gained a whole new respect for her artistic process and I was reminded that I wasn’t alone on my journey.

When did you first know you wanted to be an artist?

When I was very young! I have a picture hanging in my studio of me when I was 2½ years old painting outside in one of my father’s dress shirts. For me, it serves as a reminder that this is what I’m supposed to be doing.

What do you like about making art in Los Angeles?

I feel totally inspired by my friends and the spaces that surround me. Through my exploration of architecture here I’ve developed a taste for finding beauty in the decay. Lucky for me, there’s no shortage of that in this city.

What do you dislike about making art in Los Angeles?

The politics-- but you find that in any type of business.

HAPPY is pleased to present “Vestiges of the Original Plan”, an exhibition of new work by Los Angeles artist Chelsea Dean. Dean offers drawings and photographic light boxes showcasing the mid-century modern architecture of Rudolph Schindler, Richard Neutra and John Lautner - three influential architects of the twentieth century whose most important work can be found in South California. Dean’s pristine drawings and photographs of selected Southern California structures honor and document these aging and, in some cases, deteriorating monuments. As the elements and years of neglect wreak havoc on these symbols of perfection, Dean comes to terms with her own artistic concerns by allowing the elements (rain, sun, pollution) to wreak havoc directly on her photographs. In addition, Dean’s painstakingly rendered drawings are further manipulated by the artist in an act of self-defiance that allows her to collect, re-create and ultimately let go. Dean’s celebration of these icons is cautionary and situates the artist as detective, conservator, historian, performer and martyr. “Vestiges of the Original Plan” is a memorial to passing perfection. Chelsea Dean was born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona and has a BA in Studio Art from the University of Puget Sound and an MFA in Drawing from Claremont Graduate University.

In our project room Donald Krieger produces a site-specific installation entitled “A Garland for Walt Whitman”. Using a series of quotes and images pertaining to and taken directly from the life and work of the celebrated American poet Walt Whitman, Krieger honors the writer with a garland that will emerge from Happy’s closet and travel the span of the showroom. Krieger collaborates with Whitman creating intimate keepsakes with striking imagery that is political, subversive, cryptic and whimsical. Krieger takes the essence of Whitman’s work and gives us a fusion of writer and artist, mentor and messenger. Donald Krieger is a painter, performance artist, curator, graphic designer and musician born and raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He received his BFA from UC Irvine and an MFA from the California Institute of the Arts. He lives and works in Los Feliz.

Meet our friend Heather Arndt who used to get HAPPY by designing skate shoes for DC, Vans and World Industries. Now she gets happy with HAPPY – her newly opened Los Angeles shop that combines gift, garden and gallery to create a unique space, full of inspired gifts and thoughtful embellishments that “just make us HAPPY” Oh and her daily AM hike to the top of Mt. Hollywood helps, too.

Why did you create this company?

I love design, I love art and I love to shop. I created Happy so I could indulge in these things regularly.

What makes you HAPPY?

A thoughtful design, and inspired piece of art, a job well done, a day well spent, my daughters laugh and when all else fails, cupcakes.

What products help HAPPY to continue smooth business operations?

An accurate level with measurements, a cordless drill and a good broom. My iPhone is pretty key as well. I really don’t know how I ever functioned with out it. Remember in the early 90’s when cell phones were rare…crazy how much that has changed..

What inspired the idea?

I don’t know if there was one inspired moment. I was searching for a way to bring the elements of my life together. I do freelance product design, I finished graduate school for painting, and I have a lot of artists friends who are making great work but don’t have a lot of opportunity to show it, and a lot of designer friends who are trying to create their paths in design. Happy was born from the desire to have a space to showcase, discover, and promote the people and creations that I have come to know and love, and the ones I’ve yet to meet.

What is the best thing about starting your own gig?

You know there is the whole freedom aspect, but really, it’s the adventure of it. Everyday is a new challenge or opportunity. I wake up excited to come in and start my day, hopeful to see what new people, things, ideas will come across my path.

What is the worst thing about starting your own gig?

There’s not any real worst thing. You know, they call it work for a reason, some days; I just call a cookie a cookie and take a day off with my daughter.

What product is a must-have for you from your store?

I use my kleen kanteen and envirosax bag every day. So I think they must be my must have, however, the dining table Ping Pong kit is pretty indispensable at home.

Who visits your store?

We have every kind of patron from actors to moms from my daughters preschool, artists to city council reps. We have such a great and diverse community of customers and fans, its really heartwarming to see everyone come together at our events. I genuinely love the people who come in, they are becoming like a family.

What is HAPPY doing for the green movement?

Our team tends to lean toward companies that are environmentally conscious. Production, packaging and impact are a big determining factor when I’m looking at someone’s line.

What do you hope readers will take with them after visiting your store?

I hope they will feel like they found a new special spot to come check out art, find a unique gift, and most of all, feel HAPPY!

How long did it take you to set up the store? From signing the lease to opening our doors it was about 4 months. I think it will always be a work in progress. We get new ideas and change things up. Create new windows, displays, art shows…

What inspires products sold within your store?

Basically the product has to inspire me. I stick to what makes me feel excited, and that works.

Where do you shop?

What music makes you HAPPY?

Phoenix, Yeah yeah yeahs, and the Rolling Stones are in heavy rotation right now. We listen to music all day at the store, so “Pandora” is a lifesaver. I put it on “the cars” station and it plays the best 80’s mix ever. Our employees can also put in their tastes and get a mix they like AND I got my ipod back.

What product makes your mom HAPPY?

She likes all the kids’ items. She buys them for my daughter and won’t let me give her a discount. It cracks me up.

Tell us something funny about the process of creating your store.

My 3-year-old daughter Colette is my jr. merchandiser, from the beginning when she is in the shop, she’ll follow behind me rearranging everything that can be reached from 3 ft tall. Sometimes it looks better than the way I had it to begin with.

I love design, I love art and I love to shop. I created Happy so I could indulge in these things regularly.

What makes you HAPPY?

A thoughtful design, and inspired piece of art, a job well done, a day well spent, my daughters laugh and when all else fails, cupcakes.

There’s not any real worst thing. You know, they call it work for a reason, some days; I just call a cookie a cookie and take a day off with my daughter.

What product is a must-have for you from your store?

I use my kleen kanteen and envirosax bag every day. So I think they must be my must have, however, the dining table Ping Pong kit is pretty indispensable at home.

Who visits your store?

What is HAPPY doing for the green movement?

Our team tends to lean toward companies that are environmentally conscious. Production, packaging and impact are a big determining factor when I’m looking at someone’s line.

What do you hope readers will take with them after visiting your store?

I hope they will feel like they found a new special spot to come check out art, find a unique gift, and most of all, feel HAPPY!

How long did it take you to set up the store?

From signing the lease to opening our doors it was about 4 months. I think it will always be a work in progress. We get new ideas and change things up. Create new windows, displays, art shows…

What inspires products sold within your store?

Basically the product has to inspire me. I stick to what makes me feel excited, and that works.

Where do you shop?

The Village here in Los Feliz has lots of great shops, Skylight Books,

Nuttaphol Ma - This Land Is Your Land

In the third installment of Pitzer’s Emerging Artist Series, Thai-born, Los Angeles based artist Nuttaphol Ma combines references to Manzanar—an abandoned Japanese relocation camp at the base of California’s Sierra Nevada mountain range—with Woody Guthrie’s missing lyrics from This Land Is Your Land. Ma’s site-specific installation explores issues of displacement, migration and survival and asks whether This Land Is Your Land is still relevant to today’s new immigrants.

This Land is Your Land is co-organized with the 18th Street Arts Center, Santa Monica.

Artwork (or artist) that changed your life and why?

Andy Warhol influenced my life in many ways. Through his work, as a young artist I saw that I could make work about anything - celebrities, current affairs, fashion, the everyday and it didn't have to look "realistic."

When did you first know you wanted to be an artist?

This is a tricky question because my definition of what an artist is changes. When I was very young I knew I wanted to be a painter. Later, I realized that art encompassed my interest in philosophy, anthropology, sociology, science and literature.

What do you like about making art in Los Angeles?

I like certain aspects of art in LA which revolves around the artists themselves, people and places that are open to challenges and ideas.

What do you dislike about making art in Los Angeles?

What I dislike about making art in LA is the careerism and professionalization of art. I am more interested in ideas, making and doing than who is showing where or the art scene.

Favorite book, film and food?

I can't narrow it down to much right now, but I am enjoying writer Alain de Botton, classic Hollywood films and growing my own food.

Favorite website?

Probably www.nytimes.com

Best art advice?

Get real world experience in the arts away from academia and see if you like it.

"registered", new drawings by May Jong.

HAPPY is pleased to present "registered", an exhibition of new drawings by May Jong. Jong investigates ownership of and intellectual rights over nature in her presentation of drawings of the The Lone Cypress®. The Lone Cypress® is the corporate logo of the Pebble Beach Company, a gated community in Central California who retain all legal rights to the tree. A consummate observer with a deft hand, Jong's drawings simply and beautifully portray the ridiculousness of the company's mission by use of her classical, pen and ink style. The viewer is invited into Jong's "personal" vision of what was once simple and free but is now simply co-opted. Jong was born in Hong Kong and raised in Los Angeles and has a BA from UC Berkeley and an MFA from Claremont Graduate University. She was co-founder and co-director of Me and You Variety Candy, an alternative art space showing emerging artists and has exhibited her work throughout Los Angeles and the United States.

Also opening, and screening in Happy's project space are selections from the Echo Park Film Center's Youth Documentary Film Class project, This is the LA River. Featuring 21 neighborhood youth between the ages of 14 and 19, each student was given a Super 8 camera to document his or her impressions of the river over one weekend. Part of the class's larger 16mm documentary film project, these personal shorts present the mysterious and sometimes forgotten LA landmark as funny, freakish, reflective, problematic, beautiful, political and ultimately a reminder of the power of the river as interpreted by these young visionaries. Contributing students: Daisy Aquino, Kaymen Barber, Cord Brooks, Niki Cornejo, Sandra Fregozo, Daniel Garcia, Ismael Antonio Garcia, Brenda Gordiano, Nalani Hernandez-Melo, Ava Hess, Spencer Jezewski, Tatiana Luboviski-Acosta, Alice Poteriaiko, Steven Ramos, Jose Santos, Rachel Syms, Mateo Tate-Contreras, Luc Unruh, Vincent Uribe, Emily Van Cise and Woodrow White.

Fresh Pressed:

Those lucky enough to attend our neighbor Fresh Pressed’s one night exhibition of polaramas by Gal Harpaz on August 7 were not just enamored with Fresh Pressed’s inspiring DIY haven for wearable expression, but got a glimpse of Harpaz’s personal polaroid panorama world. Fresh Pressed’s next show on Sept. 4 will feature work by Michael C. Hsiung. Hsiung’s charming and hilarious illustrations are a perfect fit for Fresh Pressed and the Los Feliz Art and Design District. The artist will be on hand that night to demonstrate screenprinting of selected works.

Catch Carlos Ulloa (with Eder Cetina) this Thursday, August 13 during their infamous ARTstrike. Carlos and Eder will do their one night, unofficial, unsanctioned, unexpected and underhanded art exhibition on wheels, infiltrating the Downtown Art Walk. Carlos and Eder's work will on view on the corner of 4th and Maine, from 6-11pm. Look for a big truck and enter from behind.

Carlos' dynamic work will also be seen at Happy in 2010. In the meantime, do make it to 4th and Maine and say hi to Carlos and Eder.

Artwork (or artist) that changed your life and why?

Visiting the Chinati Foundation in Marfa, TX and seeing Donald Judd’s "100 untitled works in mill aluminum" installed in person was revelatory. As you walk through the former army barrack, flanked by floor to ceiling glass windows, the aluminum boxes reflect the landscape outside and seemingly disappear and reappear before your eyes.

When did you first know you wanted to be an artist?

I honestly seem to recommit myself to becoming an artist everyday in the studio.

What do you like about making art in Los Angeles?

Not to be cliché, but I do love the light in Southern California. The urban landscape of manicured lawns and deftly created fictions in concrete is very inspiring.

What do you dislike about making art in Los Angeles?

Having had to discourage viewers from labeling my work as East Coast. (Can one develop an aesthetic growing up in New Jersey?).

Favorite book, film and food?

My favorite book is Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf. My favorite film is In the Mood for Love by Kar Wai Wong. I am always satisfied by a bowl of homemade pasta and marinara sauce.

Favorite current web site?

Wow. I am so 2000. I still go to Craigslist for everything.

Best art advice?

Make magic.

HAPPY is pleased to present “Never Odd or Even”, an exhibition of new work by Jim Gentry. Gentry uses image and language to lure the viewer into his “drawings” of birds and insects. Creating idiosyncratic gestures with sewn thread and contrasting this erratic style with subversive and stealth messages, Gentry’s seemingly innocent works are at once contemplative and visually arresting; static victims of the artist’s hand yet ultimately uplifting. Gentry’s subjects are manipulating in their simplistic beauty: soaring, dripping, electric and almost sculptural. Gentry earned his BFA from the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York. He currently lives and works in Los Angeles.

Showing in Happy’s closet is “Cut Back”, a site-specific installation by Leia Jervert. Jervert creates a life size hedge, composed of leftover material - refuse, odds and ends, scraps, things that were cut away in the past - to form an ornamental sculpture. What was once discarded will now be incorporated in the construction of something new. Where the hedge becomes unruly, viewers are encouraged to gently prune Jervert’s bittersweet reminder of what is lost and how to come to terms with it. Jervert earned her BFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York and her MFA at Claremont Graduate University. She currently lives and works in Los Angeles.

June Art Around Hollywood

HAPPY was open for the Los Feliz Art Walk on Friday night, but the festivities started early with my weekly jaunt to Scoops for some vegan almond coffee ice cream on Thursday. Scoops’ owner Tai Kim and I wandered over to Synchronicity Space (http://www.syncspacela.com/) on Melrose near Heliotrope to view their new show, The Enigmatic Shadow. It’s about negative space or something, but it’s really just a good show with standouts by Zachary Rossman and Ryan Travis Christian. Oh wait, Colin Chillag’s paintings are a total guilty pleasure. I found myself staring at them much longer than I anticipated. Look closely. And while at Sync Space, make sure you say hi to two of the nicest gallery folk in LA, Chris Gere and Katie Vonderheide.

Friday at HAPPY saw lots of new and returning friends who stopped in to see Anya Smilanick’s slick, handsome paintings of Los Angeles’ hallucinogenic landscape and to get a peek at Closet Cases. There was lively discussion and lots of art lovers happy to be out after a day of June gloom. HAPPY’s next show, to open on Friday, July 3, will feature local artists Jim Gentry (http://www.gentry.ws/) and Leia Jervert (http://www.leiajervert.net/).

A space I’ve been curious to visit is Garage Gallery (http://www.garagegalleryla.com/). Located in Los Feliz on Kingswell Ave., Garage Gallery is the brainchild of Ali Grossman. Frustrated with the art scene and loving a good party, Ali decided to open a gallery in her…Can you guess?? GARAGE! So, on the first Saturday of every month, Ali has a one night, hardcore meet and greet. Artist makes art, Ali shows art, artist meets art lovers, art gets sold, music gets played, food gets eaten and everyone is happy. Sounds right to me. On this Saturday, she presented the work of Thomas Voorhies. Voorhies simply and effectively produced numerous nocturnal snapshot paintings of the neighborhood where Garage Gallery resides. They looked great and for one night they illuminated Ali’s rustic yet perfect backyard space. And to her credit, you leave wanting more.

Hello Happy visitors! If you need something to do later this week, check out Happy artist Chelsea Dean and Janice Gomez's collaborative piece at the landmark Charles F. Lummis home. If you've not been to the Lummis home (which he designed and built himself) this group exhibition called Bringing the Past to Light is a good reason to get yourself over to Highland Park. Scattered around the home and garden are different art installations that honor Lummis and bring Los Angeles' past to the present.

Saturday night, heading north on one of my favorite streets in Los Angeles, York Blvd. led me to Figueroa Produce (www.figueroaproduce.com) in Highland Park for avocados. Not just any avocados, but 3 organic avocados for 99¢! Following that healthy find, it seemed natural to visit the infamous Galco’s Soda Pop Stop (www.sodapopstop.com) a few blocks north on York.
Sadly, I arrived 5 minutes after closing, but I was able to get a sweet shot of their signage.

Onward on York for a little art at Sea and Space Explorations; a great space doing very different and thought provoking projects sandwiched between Occidental College and a greasy burger joint. Opening that night was Through the Looking Glass: The Los Angeles Aqueduct, an installation by Nicole Antebi & May Jong.

Through the Looking Glass is a multi-media piece that tells the manipulated history of the Los Angeles Aquaduct. Can’t wait to return to find out how little I know about a very important subject in a city that often ignores what’s right in front of them. Or in this case, what’s brought to them.

May Jong will be the featured artist in Happy’s September exhibit. In the meantime, check out Through the Looking Glass: The Los Angeles Aqueduct through May 30 at Sea and Space Explorations. They’re at:

HAPPY presents paintings by Anya Smilanick. “In Parallel” finds the crowded functional structures of Los Angeles and brings them to their most simplified forms. Smilanick’s work is comprised of systematic vertical and horizontal lines, dotted with silhouettes of select objects and structures that define parts of the city. Smilanick’s “In Parallel” works segment and elucidate the overwhelming urban landscape that is Los Angeles.

HAPPY features paintings by Devon T.S. Tsuno. “A Nature Calculation” observes the landscape of Los Angeles by simultaneously fragmenting and evaluating his life long home. Painted from images taken while on fishing and biking sojourns along the San Gabriel River, the Los Angeles River, and the east side of Los Angeles; Tsuno’s abstractions recall a city organism composed of beautifully ordered concrete and metal, integrated and often interdicted by violent layers of vegetation. He uses spray paint and acrylic paint, to re-imagine Los Angeles through color theory and hard edge abstraction.

Devon T.S. Tsuno was born and raised in Los Angeles; he currently works in Echo Park. He received his MFA from Claremont Graduate University in 2005, and a BFA from California State University, Long Beach in 2002. His work has been shown in Los Angeles at Carl Berg Gallery, Sam Lee Gallery, Whittier College and Raid Projects. Tsuno is currently an instructor at Cal State Long Beach, Cypress College, ULV and East Los Angeles College.

David Weidman was a prominent artist in the advertising and animation studios in the 50s and 60s. During that time, he produced a series of limited edition silk screened prints. He is currently offering many of those prints for sale in limited editions signed. They are valued as fine graphic statements as well as 60s and 70s collectibles.

Is Hollywood Boulevard the new Melrose Avenue?

Remember back in the day when Melrose Avenue was the bomb? (Before the Starbucks and gridlock?) Well, the Los Feliz Ledger has nominated a stretch of Hollywood Boulevard as "the new Melrose." The paper reports a growing number of hip shops are lining the street. One of the originals is the Soap Plant/Wacko, which used to be on Melrose. Details:

"The landlords have been really great about encouraging interesting business to move into the area," said Heather Arndt, owner of the home and accessories store Happy. Confederacy, a few doors from Happy, is one of them. It’s a high-end indie fashion store for men and women that opened in October. The owners, stylist to the stars Ilaria Urbinati and actor Danny Masterson, added a Euro-style coffee shop and vintage newsstand to the shop. Closer to Vermont Avenue is Maya, an exotic jewelry and gift store. Its sister store was one of the first shops to invade Melrose before it was "Melrose." Other stores are expected to follow these trailblazers in the coming months. Arndt says a denim store and a record store are moving in. Restaurants and bars are expected to follow as well, according to Jonathan Sample from Fresh Pressed, a custom T-shirt screen shop also on the strip. "For a long time this area was just a traffic conduit from Sunset to the West side," said Sample. "It's becoming a destination."

Silverlake Conservatory of Music Hullabaloo

Last night we went to the Silverlake Conservatory of Music Hullabaloo at Union Station downtown Los Angeles. It was great fun. Co-founders Flea and Tree performed, along with students and teachers of the conservatory, and members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic string bass quartet. There was a great auction, and lots of, obviously, great music.

Earlier in the months I had the great opportunity to attend a panel discussion at Bonhams & Butterfields with the brilliant ceremacist, Otto Heino, and amazing furniture designer Sam Maloof.

Both are well into their 90's and were surprisingly funny. They shared stories and answered questions. Both are still actively working and, if you are ever in Ojai or Alto Loma, they welcome visitors at their studios. So worth the trip. I will be planning to visit each hopefully soon.
